Samsung's Quantum Processor - the 4K and 8K effect

Arguably the most significant improvement Samsung has made to its QLED range for 2019 is the introduction to all those models of the Quantum Processor.

This chip could make a big difference to your customer experience, in more ways than one, with the power that it possesses.

Perhaps the biggest advantage is the processor's upscaling qualities, which uses machine learning and artificial intelligence to improve all lower definition content.

Its presence will most certainly be felt in the QLED sets, but how reliant you are on the upscaling mostly depends on what resolution you're watching.

The amount of 4K programming has been growing for a while now, with video streaming services and live broadcasters now offering more and more options.

Ultra HD streaming is now available on Netflix, although you'll need a premium package to watch it in 4K. That said, you'll be able to use the app on four screens at the same time.

YouTube has been able to support 4K streaming for quite some time and you can select it as a quality option on each video, provided your television is compatible.

You can purchase 4K UHD movies through YouTube, or subscribe to their YouTube TV service that incorporates over 70 channels, although most of them are currently American.

Amazon is also offering 4K content through its Prime Instant Video platform, so on-demand material is coming on in a big way.

Live broadcasters are starting to follow suit, with sports the most noticeable. Samsung have tried to get ahead of the game by striking a partnership with BT Sport.

The official BT Sport app has been launched, with a 4K UHD channel available, which Samsung's smart platforms have access to.

It's going to be some time before 4K is over-the-air programming, but leaps and bounds have been passed since its inception. Until that comes, you'll need something like the processor.

The starting point is where 8K native content finds itself, although movie makers and broadcasters are experimenting past 4K.

Some films are now shot on 6K cameras and a higher resolution does allow editors more room to crop and zoom, but delivering an 8K blockbuster is another matter.

Japan is the only country in the world to launch an 8K television channel and they are hoping to broadcast the 2020 Tokyo Olympics at the resolution.

In the UK and Europe, such advances are years away and if you've got or are getting a Samsung 8K TV, you could be reliant on the processor for a long time.

The Quantum Processor 8K chip debuted on the 2018 televisions, which we've seen and have as part of an exhibition at our showroom on Boston Road in Beaumont Leys, Leicester.

We can tell you that the upscaling is as accomplished as they come. We've tried it out with some 4K footage on an 8K TV, with even the 8K demos about enough to take your breath away.

It will do its absolute best with high and standard definition footage and do a fine job, but the standard will only improve as 4K content progresses.

Gamers are seeing more and more titles released in 4K on the PS4 Pro and Xbox One, with the release of the PlayStation 5 promising a wave of 8K hype.

All of Samsung's 2019 QLED models have a game enhancer, which uses the AI to enhance the playing experience, with low input lag rates.

Is it worth buying a 4K Blu-ray player? Well, 4K HDR discs aren't all that widespread, but they are growing. Much like the resolution, they'll expect market growth going forward.
