Heat Pump vs. Condenser Dryers Guide

Tumble dryers make washing and drying clothes quick and easy. But there's set to be a change to the type of tumble dryers retailers can sell, as the government sets out new regulations to improve energy efficiency in home appliances.

Condenser and vented tumble dryers will no longer be manufactured in 2027, so what does this mean for you? We'll take a closer look at why the phase-out is happening and compare heat pump tumble dryers with condenser tumble dryers so you can understand the difference.

In short: Condenser and vented tumble dryers are being phased out in January 2027 in the UK due to new energy-efficiency regulations. Heat pump tumble dryers are cost-effective, energy-efficient, and can save households hundreds of pounds a year by making the switch. Why are condenser dryers being phased out?

From 19th January 2027, condenser and vented tumble dryers are going to be phased out in the UK. This is due to new Ecodesign regulations set out by the Energy Secretary, Ed Miliband. These guidelines are being put in place as the government becomes stricter on energy performance standards, protecting households from being hit with high running costs.

  • The government suggests UK households could save hundreds of pounds a year with heat pump tumble dryers, using 58% less energy than condenser and vented models.
  • Stricter regulations also mean lower carbon emissions, which help the UK towards net-zero targets.
  • New regulations introduce tougher requirements for energy labels, standby power consumption and product information to make it easier for consumers to compare appliances.

Key changes to tumble dryers

As new tumble dryer legislation comes into force, there are a few changes that consumers should be aware of. From January 2027, tumble dryers will have:

  • Revised energy labels: Consumers should be able to clearly see which appliances are most efficient.
  • An eco setting: To reduce energy consumption even further.
  • Minimum 80% condensation rate: To prevent homes from becoming damp.
  • Efficient standby settings: Tumble dryers will not be able to use more than 0.5W when on standby - equating to less than 1p in energy costs.

Will I still be able to use my condenser tumble dryer?

Yes, if you own a condenser or vented tumble dryer, you can still use it after the phase-out date. You will also still be able to repair and service it; regulations simply mean that you won't be able to buy a new one.

When your existing condenser dryer reaches the end of its lifespan, you'll have to replace it with an appliance that meets new requirements, for example, a heat pump tumble dryer.

What's the difference between a heat pump and a condenser dryer?

A heat pump dryer recycles warm air to dry washing, instead of consistently creating new heat. Moisture is removed from the air, condensed into water, with the remaining heat recycled back into the drum.

Heat pump tumble dryers typically don't get any hotter than 50°C, meaning loads take almost twice as long to dry. However, lower temperatures mean the drying cycle is gentler, making it a good option for delicate items.

A condenser dryer heats air with an electric heating element and condenses moisture into a water tank. Hot air passes through the drum to absorb moisture from your clothes. The moist air is cooled and condensed into water. This is then removed through a drain or hose.

Condenser tumble dryers heat to around 70-75°C, meaning they dry laundry quicker than heat pump dryers.

A vented tumble dryer is similar to a condenser tumble dryer. These appliances remove warm, damp air through a hose that needs to be vented outside. Vented tumble dryers dry clothes quickly, but at a higher energy cost than heat pump tumble dryers.

They heat to around 60-75°C, with some models reaching 80°C during a drying cycle.

Which is more cost-effective to run?

Heat pump tumble dryers are the most cost-effective on the market, using around 1.5-2.5 kWh per cycle. An average 9kg heat pump tumble dryer costs around 41p per dry.

Condenser tumble dryers are less cost-effective in comparison. The same 9kg condenser tumble dryer uses between 4-5.5kWh per cycle, costing homeowners approximately £1.36 per dry. If you have a vented tumble dryer, these typically use around 5-6 kWh per cycle, equating to £1.31 per dry.

Making the switch to a heat pump tumble dryer from a condenser tumble dryer can save homeowners around 95p per cycle for a 70% reduction in drying costs.

But what about the upfront cost? Our Head of Buying and Marketing, Michael White, says:

"There's a common misconception that heat pump tumble dryers are out of reach for the average UK household, but that's not strictly true. They typically come with a higher upfront price than condenser or vented models, but the gap has narrowed considerably in recent years with Chinese manufacturers challenging established brands. These appliances offer premium features at competitive prices, with brands like Hisense, Midea, and Haier making heat pump dryers more accessible."

Which tumble dryer is more efficient?

A heat pump dryer is more energy efficient than a condenser dryer as it reuses warm air within the appliance, rather than continually generating new heat. This takes a lot less electricity to dry the same load of laundry.

Condenser tumble dryers use electric heating elements to heat fresh air throughout the process, resulting in faster drying times but higher energy use.

Michael says:

"Heat pump tumble dryers are the clear choice for households looking to reduce their energy consumption, using significantly less electricity than both condenser and vented models. While drying cycles are typically longer, with the average heat pump cycle taking up to 3 hours, compared to a condenser tumble dryer cycle taking up to 2 hours, the trade-off is lower running costs and greater energy efficiency. For most households, the savings on electricity bills over the appliance's lifetime make longer drying times worth it."

Heat pump vs. condenser dryers: the practicalities

Along with energy efficiency and cost effectiveness, it's important to weigh up the practicalities of both heat pump and condenser tumble dryers, and how they'd fit into your lifestyle:

Michael says:

"Heat pump tumble dryers offer the same everyday convenience as condenser models, with comparable drum capacities, flexible installation options and straightforward maintenance.

Longer drying times mean they may not suit households that prioritise speed, and they're also not recommended for homes that intend to keep their dryer in an outhouse or garage. However, lower energy consumption means they can deliver substantial savings over their lifetime, so for many consumers, lower running costs, along with the new regulations, make them a smart investment."

If you already have a condenser tumble dryer, there's no need to go out and buy a new heat pump dryer, as you can still use your existing appliance. These new regulations also don't apply to washer dryers, so you can continue to use and buy these as normal.

Methodology: Marks Electrical compared the manufacturer-reported energy consumption of popular 9 kg heat pump, condenser and vented tumble dryers sold on its website. Up to ten models were selected from each technology and capacity category based on Marks Electrical's 'popularity' filter at the time of analysis, with all available models included where fewer than ten were available. Running costs were calculated using manufacturer-reported energy consumption per standard drying cycle and the UK domestic electricity unit rate of 26.11p/kWh (price cap: 1 July–30 September 2026). Comparisons were made between dryers of the same capacity, 9 kg. As the analysis is based on manufacturer test data and products available from a single retailer, the figures provide an estimate of typical running costs. Actual costs will vary depending on the model, drying programme, electricity tariff and how the appliance is used.
